Concept

To mark the ITALY: a New Collective Landscape exhibition curated by Angela Rui with Elisabetta Donati de Conti and Matilde Losi, the ADI Design Museum in Milan is inviting Italian designers under 35 to submit their work as part of a new design landscape which reflects on a climate of continuous ecological and social transformations.

We live in a condition of mutual vulnerability: that of man towards the environment under the influence of the climate crisis and that of the environment under the effect of the impact that our species has had on the planet. The historical, economic, social and environmental context in which designers operate also requires a transformation of the languages, manufacturing/production and planning processes of the design system, and therefore also a reinterpretation of what an exhibition presenting such challenges should embody.

ITALY: a New Collective Landscape is an exhibition/programme consisting of projects, products and new virtuous design and production practices, taking into account the challenges that the current global situation is presenting, as well as looking at post-exhaustion as a field of creativity in which the notion of good also includes its collective potential as a common benefit, around which much of the contemporary debate revolves.

Against this concept of a collective backdrop, virtuous practices are numerous and they may take the forms of:

Regenerative Projects

Bearing in mind that the built environment and production processes can have a positive and regenerative impact on the environment, applications may range from the design of new materials to models of circular economy and health, alternative development models, design for ecological transition, contextual design and sustainable systems in environmental, economic and social terms all together.

Relational Projects

By supporting the idea that design is always a social practice, the products and projects presented may be presented as instruments with which to foster community and interdependence, introducing concepts such as equality, collaboration and human and non-human coexistence also in terms of collective and participatory practices mediated by artifacts, interfaces or actions.

Systemic Projects

By observing the system of relationships that a design product sets in motion both for the resources it needs and for the outputs it generates, the proposals may involve the reform of certain phases or indeed of the entire production chain, suggesting alternative processes or supply chains that may reduce the environmental impact and/or facilitate social inclusion, and the design of relationship systems that affect the procurement and use of tangible or intangible resources

Valid areas for application are: product, process, research design, editorial design, installation, documentary, participatory action, innovative start-up, workshop and the digital environment, always in the hope that some participations may involve the public programme to be held within the exhibition itself.

Candidates must be of Italian nationality, but they do not need to be resident in Italy. The projects submitted must have been created between 2018 and the date of the application, and available for installation from 1st March 2023.

Participation in the call is completely free and the deadline for sending the application is 11.59 pm on 11/30/2022. Applications arriving after this date will not be considered. The projects will be selected by a multidisciplinary advisory board coordinated by the curatorial team.

The advisory board will evaluate each project based on the following criteria:

A | Relevance to at least one of the themes presented in the exhibition.

B | Actual relevance in the field of practice, research and planning in contemporary design.

C | The ability to address urgent environmental and social issues, supported by an exhaustive design and materialization survey.

D | The presence of the inclusive, participatory and collaborative dimension, both in the design process and in the format in which the project is presented.

The outcome of the application will be communicated via e-mail by December to all candidates.

A regularly updated curatorial team that guarantees a wide range of constantly redefined visions and programmes.
A museum that is open and accessible to everyone in line with design for all criteria.

The exhibitions and services are in a single open space and are accompanied by the presence of specifically trained cultural mediators whose job is to allow visitors direct access to and involvement with the contents.

A single app – created thanks to the technical partnership with Orbital Cultura (Nexi Group) – manages the ticket office, visits to exhibitions and provides constantly updated information about the museum’s initiatives.

It is a place open to everyone, even those who don’t want to visit the exhibitions. Members of the public can spend their time here, meet friends and hold business meetings. The glazed gallery, the focal point of the museum, connects via Ceresio with via Bramante via a walkway that becomes a genuinely new design path.
