Reason for the award:
Normally toys are "realistic" or infantile reductions of mechanical means, or equally realistic or childishly ironic imitations of animals or human figures. This small quadrumane created by Munari and produced by Pigomma, which has been awarded the "La Rinascente Compasso d'Oro 1954" award represents instead an interpretation of the character of the "character". It has acquired a formal essentiality through the typical use of the material, (a steel wire framework coated with foam rubber) which allows the user to create an infinite number of positions. This toy belongs to a superior category, something which has made it the object of intellectual interest
