Reason for the award:
The Compasso d'Oro 1964 was awarded to the architect Marco Zanuso and his collaborator Richard Sapper for the design of this polyethylene chair for kindergartens and elementary schools. The first chair entirely made of plastic, it constitutes an example of precise exploitation of the material’s industrial possibilities and a pleasing solution to a number of related manufacturing problems. Above all, on the one hand the typological characteristics of the piece produced and the fact that it is combinable and demountable are highlighted, along with ease of cleaning and correct calibration in terms of weight as a toy chair, as well as being a small part of a constructive structure; on the other hand, there is the precise desire to form and dignify the material used with the design, the finesse of the detail, in the deformative and caricatured quality of the whole. Awarded the “British Plastics International Grand Prix" at the British Plastics Exhibition.
