Reason for the award:
The 1960 Compasso d'Oro has been awarded to the Alpa Flying Dutchman with particular consideration for the way in which the precise codified characteristics of a sporting competition marine vessel have been interpreted through the use of unusual materials by fully exploiting their specific characteristics, including among others, those of lightness, water-resistance, weldability and flexibility. However, this craft also shows a "necessary" relationship between the shape of the parts and the singular functions that they are called to carry out (see for example the masterful details of the mast and the tie rods) and such a profound integration between the parts and the complex of functions that we have no hesitation in defining it as a qualitatively exceptional example of design activity.
