Compact melamine table service

The Compact table service designed by Massimo Vignelli and awarded the Compasso d’Oro 1964, offers in the opinion of the Jury, two fundamental points of interest. On the one hand, it takes a new look at superimposition and concentration as functions of the space saving indispensable in the case of products of this kind; this characteristic is connected with the typological representation of this object, with its low cost and the optimum use of the material’s technological characteristics. On the other hand, it is inclined to initiate the design of the product on a secondary level in which the communicativeness of the functional characteristics is connected to a nobility of design that is no longer controversial or experimental, but rather of going further in depth and diversification in a context that is supposedly already linguistically renewed.
